Glossary — Images, audio and video

Deepfake

A deepfake is AI-generated video, image or audio showing a real person doing or saying something they never did.

Simply put#

The same technology that generates images and voices can be pointed at a specific person's face and voice. The technical difference is small; the ethical difference is the whole thing.

Example#

More common than celebrity videos is the plain voice scam: a cloned voice calls and asks for an urgent transfer.

Why it matters to you#

Two practical conclusions. Inside a company, neither voice nor video can be the only identification for a financial decision. And the EU AI Act requires realistic AI-generated content to be labelled.
