Free vs paid AI: is it worth paying?
Three questions whose answers decide whether €20 a month is a good deal for you or money thrown away.
Most people do not need paid AI. Some need it badly. The difference is not how technical you are — it is how often you use it and how important the work is.
Three questions#
1. How often do you use it?
A couple of times a week — the free tier is fine. Every day, several times — paid pays for itself on avoided waiting alone.
2. How long are the things you give it?
Free tiers have a smaller context window. If you regularly upload contracts, reports or long documents, the free tier hits its limit sooner than you expect — and sooner still in Estonian, because the same text costs more tokens.
3. Are you pasting in work information?
This is actually the most important question. Free consumer tiers often use conversations for training. Paid tiers, and business accounts especially, usually do not. If you are pasting customer data or commercial secrets, this stops being a price question and becomes a liability question.
What paying actually buys#
- Newer, more capable models
- A larger context window
- Less queueing at peak times
- More features: file analysis, images, custom assistants
- Usually better data-use terms
What it does not buy#
It does not turn a bad prompt into a good one. If your answers are poor because the question was three words long, €20 a month will not fix that.
The honest recommendation#
Use the free tier for a month and notice how often you hit a limit or wait. If that happens more than a couple of times a week, pay. If it does not, do not.
And if you use AI at work with customer data, the free tier is not the right choice regardless of how rarely you use it.
